From 1965 through 1969 I played football and ran track in Junior and Senior High School in Texas.
I always seemed to get picked for sports because I was a big kid and fast on my feet. I am not sure how I let myself get involved in sports since I should have played chess and tennis.
In the summer I was a lifeguard but that is another story.
I managed to play half back, full back, and split end on the football offense and also played a defensive end. In track I ran the 440-yard relay, ran the 440-yard dash, and ran the 100-yard dash and in my spate time tossed the shot put.
The fun and pain of playing football and running track was something I did because that is what was expected of me. Who expected it of me I am not sure. My mother sure did not want me to play football, run track or be a lifeguard. So I guess it was just the times that caused me to be involved.
I was Captain of the football and track team in Junior High and High school. Luck played a big part in my being a Captain. I think most of the players and runners just did not want to be the fall guy when we lost.
After being involved in sports from 1965 through 1969 I kind of got used to sports.
Of course I managed to break, bruise, cut, scrape and hurt just about anything you could hurt on your body while playing sports.
When high school was over I did not get a football scholarship but tried to play football at Tarleton State College in Stephenville, TX. I found out real quick it was a good thing I was not there on scholarship. These people were as big as a house and tried to kill me on a daily basis for six weeks. I turned in my football pads for Army ROTC. Army ROTC was not what I needed either, but that too is another story.
So after so many years of working out daily and getting hit and hitting others, not to mention all the running, I bowed out of the sports field and joined the Army (the draft was alive and well) for another kind of sport and exercise.
Stay tuned to the life and times of me.
